Organizers of the Ninth Annual John Stevens Memorial Santa Scramble charity golf tournament have deemed this year’s outing a success. The event, which took place Nov. 7, raised $17,600 for the Bryan County Children’s Fund.
As in past year’s, the event was put together by the Good ‘Ol Boys of Richmond Hill. Good ‘Ol Boy and event chairman Dick Brockhoff said even though last year’s proceeds of $23,000 was considerably higher, the group is elated with what they made in consideration of today’s economy.
"We were a little worried going into it," Brockhoff said. "But everything turned out really well. We had some great sponsors and some great participants that really came through for us. 18 teams in all competed this year, which makes for a great turnout. I’d like to thank everyone involved for their support."
Every dollar raised at the tournament goes toward the purchase of toys, food or clothing for this cause. Last year’s events went to help make Christmas better for 400 kids.
Brockhoff said, even though the Santa Scramble is over, he encourages everyone to donate money to the Bryan County Children’s Fund, which is coordinated through Bryan County Family Connection.
"I know times are tough, but we all need to think about what this holiday means to the kids," Brockhoff said. "This fund will directly enable less fortunate kids in this county to have a better Christmas. Anything is appreciated."
Eligible children are chosen through referrals from schools, churches and local social service agencies, in conjunction with Bryan County Family Connection. Applications for eligibility can be picked at the Bryan County DFCS offices.
Contributions can be sent to The Bryan County Children’s Fund, PO Box 1239, Richmond Hill, GA 31324. For more information, contact BCFC Coordinator Wendy Sims at 756-3602.
