The RHHS boys and girls soccer team continued their winning ways in recent competitions. On March 6, they played their first region matches against South Effingham, and they faced Liberty County in other regional competition on Friday.
The girls defeated South Effingham 3-0. Lady Wildcat rookie Laura Nunnery once again proved her worth by scoring two goals. Lauren Hall scored the other while Sarah Parker made one save.
As expected, South Effingham didn’t try to score in the second meeting of the two teams thus far this season. They packed the box in again with 8-10 defenders and made it hard to shoot.
"We played our most technically proficient game with one and two touches, 45 degree diagonal passes, changes of direction, chips over the top of the defense, and crosses," said head coach Steve Kollman. "Our defense again was stellar."
On Friday, they obliterated Liberty County. Nunnery scored four goals, Hall scored three, while Allison Snider, Katie Hudson, Tyler Carlson, Mackenzie Qua and Lori Barnes each scored a goal each. They played St. Vincent’s last night, but results were not available as of press time.
The boys suffered a painfully close loss to South Effingham on March 6 after 80 minutes of regulation play, 10 minutes of overtime and a 10 kick shootout.
"It was a hard fought disappointment," said boys head coach Wade Wright. "We felt we played a better match overall. We were unlucky in some aspects but lucky in others. It was a typical match between two equal teams."
The boys came back strong on Friday with an 8-0 win over Liberty County. Ben Botelho and Greyson Surges scored two goals each while Campbell Berry, Josh Biering, Nick Harris and Brian Wood each scored a single goal.
"Great confidence game," said Wright. "We did some nice things, and I was able to work with the bench in a game situation which improves our depth."
