Since being hired as the Bryan County baseball coach last spring, Kyle Farmer has constantly worked at ways to reach out to the Redskins community in order to generate an interest in the program.
Farmer, his coaches and players so far have participated in several community projects, put on two day camps last fall, hosted a tailgate party for fans as a football game and earlier this season had a night in which firemen, policemen and EMTs were recognized.
“The community here has always been a strong supporter of Bryan County athletics,” said Farmer who played against the Redskins as a player at Calvary Day and competed against them as an assistant coach at Benedictine when they were in the same region.
“That’s one of the main reasons the job was so appealing,” Farmer said. “I remember playing against them and they always had good crowds. And the support has been everything I could ask for from both the community and the administration.
“I think we have a bright future here.”
And as part of his community outreach program, Farmer and his team will welcome that future to Redskins Field on Monday night when Bryan County plays Islands at 6 p.m. to kickoff the final week of the regular season.
It will be dubbed “Rec Night” with all youth baseball players invited to attend. Admission for any player wearing his or her rec team jersey will be admitted free of charge.
There will be, Farmer said, both pre-game and post-game activities.
The pre-game fun, he said, will be a meet and greet with Bryan County players and then they will take the field through the player tunnel at their position with Redskins players. Shortstops, for example, will run to short with Redskins standout Cooper Ennis.
Post-game activities will consist of base running for all rec league athletes, an autograph session with Redskins players and photo ops on the field with players and coaches. Farmer is asking that all players attending be at the field 30 minutes prior to first pitch.
In other games next week, all at home, Bryan County will play Savannah Country Day on Wednesday and Tattnall County on Thursday. The Redskins will open Class A-DII state tournament play on April 23 at Wilcox County.
