Recent Richmond Hill High School graduate MaKiyah Matthews has officially put pen to paper, signing with Division-II Augusta University for basketball.

“It was an easy decision,” Matthews said. “They are a good school. They have great facilities. The weight-room is nice and they have four different schools. It’s a great place to be.”

A point guard on the team, Matthews was voted as a team captain for her senior season and led her team to a 17-12 overall record.

Matthews was a pivotal piece of the Lady Wildcats basketball team this last season that led them into a playoff run.

“In the face of adversity, my daughter has shown unwavering resilience and determination, achieving great successes,” Matthews’ mom Heather Matthews said. “Her ability to persevere and wait for the right opportunity has paid off! I have no doubt that she will continue to excel and make a positive impact in whatever she pursues. Now watch what happens next!”

Seeing time on varsity all four years of high school, Matthews was able to eclipse the 1,000 point mark in her last couple of games, finishing with 1,016 points in her career.

“We are really excited for her,” head girls’ basketball coach Sarah Jones said. “She has talked about this day since day one. She had some other colleges interested, but I think it’s a great fit for her at Augusta.

“It’s always good to have a kid play all four years on varsity. Her teammates respected that about her. She helped build the program. It’s everyone else’s turn to fill that role now.”

Matthews is the tenth signee for Coach Jones, who took over the program 11 years ago. This is her first head coach job, so all ten signees have been from RHHS.
