Girls' basketball preview: Redskins lead with momentum
After a strong scrimmage win against Statesboro, Bryan County will begin their season away against Greenbrier this Saturday.

If a scrimmage game with Statesboro is any indication, Bryan County is headed for another big season and Coach Mario Mincey’s 300th win could come before the Redskins play a home game.

Showing the balance and defense that are trademarks of Mincey’s teams, Bryan County knocked off Class 5A Statesboro–42-32—on the Blue Devils’ floor last Wednesday. The Redskins will open regular season play against Greenbrier (1-0) Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Evans in the Tip-Off Classic.

Statesboro, coming off a 22-5 season which saw it advance to the Class 5A Sweet 16 in state tournament play, couldn’t keep up with the smaller Redskins who showed they are going to be a force to contend with in Region 3A-DII play.

“We got good production out of our starting backcourt of Jasmine Mikell and Liz Harvey,” said Mincey who starts the season with 297 wins in his 18th season at Bryan County. “They combined for 17 points.”

Katelyn King and Nevaeh Lovett spearheaded an excellent defensive effort, said Mincey, who added that the Redskins bench played a key role, too. Senior Ashanti Brown and freshman Layla Mincey combined for 16 points, 15 rebounds and four blocked shots.

In addition to playing Greenbrier at Evans, the Redskins will have road games at Liberty County, South Effingham and McIntosh County Academy before their home opener on Dec. 6 against Portal.
