There are certain colors that are traditionally used when people decorate for Christmas. I don’t think that it is by accident that they remind us of the Biblical Christmas story. I want us to look at them today and to see how they connect.
First, we see the color red used on bows, bulbs, ribbons, and poinsettias.
This should remind us of the blood of Jesus that was spilt during His sacrificial death for the sins of the world. The primary reason Jesus came to earth was to make it possible for us to have forgiveness. The scripture tells us that “without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sins.”
Then, there is the color green, that we see primarily in Christmas trees and wreaths, which should remind us of the new life that we possess after we accept the forgiveness offered through Jesus.
It also can remind us that only through Jesus can we have the promise of eternal life.
Then we see the color gold on Christmas treetops, bulbs, and garland.
This can remind us of the fact that Jesus was born as a king who would have a spiritual kingdom. The wisemen even said that they were searching for “the king of the Jews.”
This should also remind us that Jesus expects us to allow Him to be king or Lord over our lives.
Then we have the color white that we see primarily in lights that should remind us of the purity of Jesus. He was the only one born perfect with no sin.
He was God in human flesh.
Then we see the color yellow we find in the flames of candles that should remind us that Jesus came as a light to the world to show us the right way to live as we follow Him. This should also remind us that Jesus said that we are also to be lights to those around us. We do this by living transformed lives and by directing others to Jesus who can transform their lives.
So, hopefully this year, even as you take down your decorations you will once again be reminded of these things that have changed your life or will change your life if you will open up your heart to the one that this Christmas is all about.
