Letter to the editor: Republican goal is to wreck economy
LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Editor

The current debt limit crisis has me scratching my head. Kevin McCarthy wants huge spending cuts before Republicans will sign off on raising the debt limit. They claim to be true believers in balanced budgets and lowering our national debt. Sounds great until you take a look at their actions just a few years ago.

When Trump was president, the same bunch of fiscal conservatives voted for every big-ticket unfunded bill to come out of congress. Three trillion COVID stimulus, no problem. $1.9 trillion tax cut for the ultrarich and multinationals, ditto. In just four years the Trump administration, with total support from congressional Republicans, increased the national debt by $7.8 trillion.

During this span, there were three votes to raise the debt limit. Republicans voted yes with little or no debate, no wailing or grandstanding with demands to balance the budget. They just quietly said OK.

So how can we believe they’re serious about deficit spending now when they obviously weren’t just a few years ago? Looks like the real goal is to bring the economy to it’s knees just before 2024 elections. If you agree, contact your representative and tell them to cut the theatrics and vote to raise the debt limit, just like they did under Trump.
