Editor’s Corner: Some lyricism
Andrea Gutierrez new

September is a very important month for many reasons. It’s the month of Labor Day, which is my third-favorite holiday.

It’s also the month where pumpkin spice lattes begin to re-appear on chain store coffee shop menus like a rash. (I am a big fan of Dunkin’s Almond Spice Latte, myself).

But the changing of the seasons can be difficult for many, as time ceases for no man. One of many favorite songs is called “Wake Me Up When September Ends”, by Green Day. Billie Joe Armstrong, the lead singer, wrote the song about his father who died on cancer when Armstrong was 10 years old--in September 1982.

The song features on Green Day’s album “American Idiot”, and is probably one of my favorite albums in general.

I sometimes feel like my music taste is permanently stuck in the 2000s, which is mildly alarming because the album “American Idiot” is officially 20 years old.

As I romanticize the music of the 00s, future generations might one day obsess over the music of my youth, filling their Spotify playlists with Lana Del Rey and Two Door Cinema Club. (I feel old typing that sentence out...!)

Wake Me Up When September Ends, Green Day

Summer has come and passed The innocent can never last Wake me up when September ends

Like my fathers come to pass even years has gone so fast Wake me up when September ends Here comes the rain again Falling from the stars Drenched in my pain again Becoming who we are

As my memory rests But never forgets what I lost Wake me up when September ends Summer has come and passed The innocent can never last Wake me up when September ends

Ring out the bells again Like we did when spring began Wake me up when September ends

Here comes the rain again Falling from the stars Drenched in my pain again Becoming who we are

As my memory rests But never forgets what I lost Wake me up when September ends

Summer has come and passed The innocent can never last Wake me up when September ends

Like my father’s come to pass Twenty years has gone so fast

Wake me up when September ends Wake me up when September ends Wake me up when September ends
