The city of Richmond Hill on Tuesday became the final government body in Bryan County to pass a resolution pertaining to jobs at Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield.
The council unanimously passed a resolution offering its support of the preservation of area military bases and denouncing the proposed sequestration of the U.S. armed forces.
If sequestration is enacted, it is believed it could eliminate as many as 7,000 from Fort Stewart unless Congress finds a way to pass a budget by the end of the year.
“I vote for (the resolution) with an addendum saying we should force Congress to do their job,” said council member Van Hunter. “We’re required by law to balance our budget every year, Congress needs to get off their butt and do the same.”
The council’s decision comes after the Pembroke City Council and Bryan County Board of Commissioners passed similar resolutions at their September meetings.
Other area governments, including the cities of Hinesville, Midway, Flemington and Riceboro, as well as Liberty County and the Coastal Regional Commission, also passed similar resolutions recently.
