Woman apparently abducted in Richmond Hill

A woman was reportedly forced into the trunk of her car Wednesday night in Richmond Hill and driven to Liberty County, according to police.

The apparent abduction happened around 9 p.m. Wednesday on Ponderosa Street, off of Highway 17 in Richmond Hill, Richmond Hill Police Department Chief Billy Reynolds said. The incident is still under investigation.

The suspect, described as a black male with facial hair, possibly in his forties, allegedly approached the woman and made her drive her car down Highway 17. The woman had just stopped at the nearby Arby’s for a drink and had pulled her car over on Ponderosa Street when the man approached her.

The woman, who lives in Richmond Hill, said she was forced out of her car and into the trunk around Limerick Road, according to Reynolds.

The suspect then reportedly drove for a while before stopping and abandoning the car near Freedman Grove Road in Liberty County, according to Cpl. Susan Willis with the Richmond Hill Police Department. The woman, after not hearing any noise for a while, said she then freed herself by using a quick-release latch in the trunk, Reynolds said.

The woman did not see a weapon, although the suspect told her he had one, Reynolds said. There does not appear to be a relationship between the suspect and the woman, according to Willis.

The woman did call a friend from the trunk of the car and the friend then notified police. Once the woman got out of the trunk of the car, she drove it back to the intersection of Limerick and Freedman Grove Road and called police.
