If you count Thursday, Friday and Monday, there’s a good bit going on this weekend in terms of 9/11 commemorations and Patriot Day celebrations.
Up first will be Patriot Day Runs on Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah on Thursday and Fort Stewart on Friday. Both begin at 6 a.m. and are open to anyone with access to the installations, according to officials. The runs are “in remembrance of those who died on September 11, 2001.” More than 1,000 runners are expected.
The biggest in Bryan County will likely be Richmond Hill Remembers, an event Sunday at J.F. Gregory Park hosted by Bethel Baptist Church. The event gets under way at 10:30 a.m. and will include a color guard and the 3rd Infantry Brass Band Quintet from Fort Stewart.
Officials from Richmond Hill, Bryan County and the state are expected to be on h and. The event, which will honor and remember those who died in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, also will pay tribute to local first responders – a term which includes law enforcement, firefighters, paramedics and EMTs.
Finally, in what will likely be a more low key but no less heartfelt affair, first responders in North Bryan are invited to join Flanders Powell Funeral Home and Crematory from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday for its 7th Annual North Bryan First Responders lunch.
While the above are the first to be announced, there may be other events in Bryan County and the surrounding area.
