Few details have been announced yet, but Fort Stewart officials are confirming that soldiers from the post will deploy in the effort to control the spread of ebola.
“Soldiers from the 82ndCivil Affairs Battalion, based at Fort Stewart, will be deploying to Africa as part of Operations United Assistance to support the United States mission to stop the spread of ebola,” a statement released by Maj. Matthew Fontaine, deputy public affairs officer for the 3rdInfantry Division, said.
The 82ndis a tenant unit at Stewart, not part of the 3rdID.
According to national reports, the Pentagon has said as many as 3,000 troops from various units will deploy, mostly to Liberia to provide support medical workers. They will not treat the patients themselves.
The reports have not said how many Fort Stewart troops will deploy, when they will deploy or what their destination will be.
