Just in time to ring in the warmer weather, Pembroke’s Whistle Stop Market is set to begin its operations on Wednesday, May 22 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The Market will be located on Church Street “between the Obelisk Flour Ghost Sign and the TOS Theatre” according to the City of Pembroke website.
Local vendors from Pembroke and the wider south Georgia region will gather around and sell food, produce, arts and crafts, and other goods.
One big draw of the Whistle Stop Market is the ability for shoppers to really get to know the folks behind the food they buy, according to Fernanda Camacho Hauser, Pembroke’s Director of Downtown Development.
“The Farmer’s Market helps close the gap between farmers and consumers,” said Camacho Hauser. “It helps create a more homey, familiar vibe between Whistle Stop Market shoppers and vendors.”
Camacho Hauser also says that, for future Whistle Stop Markets in upcoming years, the City of Pembroke plans to collaborate with statewide non-profit Wholesome Wave Georgia to help SNAP-eligible shoppers in Pembroke purchase fresh produce at affordable prices.
As part of its “Fresh for Less” initiative, Wholesome Wave Georgia matches every SNAP/EBT dollar spent at participating farmers’ markets.
The Market will run for nine Wednesdays between May 22 and September 4.
