At its January council meeting, the City of Pembroke approved a resolution to opt-in to a recently passed bill that would bring property tax relief to residents.
State House Bill 581, which took effect on January 1, is a property tax reform bill known for its floating homestead exemption which aims to limit how much property taxes increase when home values rise.
“The state revenue offer would set that rate so that your property tax bill wouldn’t skyrocket when there’s substantial changes from year to year,” explained Chris Benson, City Administrator.
Reading out the resolution, Mayor Tiffany Ziegler said: “The City of Pembroke recognizes and approves the HB 581 Homestead Exemption and all of the benefits and relief that HB 581 provides to its citizens.”
In other news, the re-appointments of existing city government officials were also approved under the Consent Agenda, and staff promotions within the Pembroke Police Department were presented and celebrated.
