Food drive for homeless vets

On Saturday, Nov. 18, the local American Legion Post 27 will be collecting food to support the Veterans Food Bank at the VA Clinic in Savannah. The Post will be collecting at Fire Station #1 on Ford Ave from 8 a.m.- 5 p.m. 

“We have coordinated with the VA food closet and below is a list of the things they try to put together for homeless veterans. If the folks of Richmond Hill could see a way to help even with just one item off the list; we would be grateful,” Post Adjutant John Ellis said.

“While we are planning to send this food to the Savannah VA Clinic, if you are, or know of, a local veteran or active duty family that needs some assistance like this for the holidays please contact me at jhellissr27@yahoo.com. We want to help.”

- Double bag paper sack - Proteins: - 2 Tuna Cans - 1 Chicken Can - 1 SPAM Can or other potted meat - 2 Bean Cans: pork & beans, black beans, kidney beans, navy beans, beanie weenies - 1 Bag Dry Beans - 1 Jar Peanut Butter (16 oz) - Soup/ or Stew:  2 Cans Sauce - 1 Jar or Can Red Marinara Sauce or Alfredo Sauce - Pasta: - 1 Package or Box of Pasta noodles - Rice: - 1 Package or Box of Rice Vegetables: - 4-5 Mixed Cans: corn, green beans, mixed, greens - Fruits: - 4-5 Mixed Cans: peaches, fruit cocktail, pineapple, apple sauce - Ready Meals: - 2 Mac & Cheese - 2 Hormel Microwave Meals (or any item that can be ready to eat) - 2 Top Ramen - 1 Box/Bag Instant Potatoes - Cereal: - 1 Box/Bag of Cereal - May substitute 4-5 small cereal boxes - May substitute 5-6 oatmeal, cream of wheat, or grits packets - Snack type Items if Available 

“We want to thank our fellow citizens of Richmond Hill in advance we know the folks here in the Hill will come through for veterans. This is a great community for all of us veterans,” Post Commander Dan Awtrey said.
