City of Richmond Hill announces proposed property tax increase

The City of Richmond Hill City Council has announced its intention to increase the 2024 property taxes it will levy this year by 9.14 percent over the rollback millage rate.

This tentative increase will result in a millage rate of 4.132 mills, an increase of .346 mills. Without this tentative tax increase, the millage rate will be no more than 3.786 mills. The proposed tax increase for a home with a fair market value of $350,000 and a senior exemption is approximately $31.14 and the proposed tax increase for non-homestead property with a fair market value of $450,000 is approximately $62.28.

When the total digest of taxable property is prepared, Georgia law requires a rollback millage rate must be computed that will produce the same total revenue on the current year’s digest that last year’s millage rate would have produced had no reassessments occurred.

The City’s budget requires a millage rate higher than the rollback millage rate; therefore, before the Richmond Hill City Council may set a final millage rate, Georgia law requires three public hearings to be held to allow the public an opportunity to express their opinions on the increase.

All concerned citizens are invited to the public hearings on this tax increase to be held in Council Chambers at City Hall, 40 Richard Davis Drive, Richmond Hill, Georgia on Tuesday September 3, 2024 at 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM and Council Chambers, 40 Richard Davis Drive, Richmond Hill, Georgia on Tuesday September 10, 2024 at 4:00 PM.
