In Luke 24:13-33, we enter into a scene that gives great insight into the process of how God works in our lives.
Let’s set the stage: Jesus has been crucified and two of the disciples were walking away from Jerusalem on their way to a village called Emmaus. They were discussing everything that had happened regarding the death of Jesus. As they talked, Jesus shows up and begins to walk with them but they do not even recognize Him.
A conversation takes place between the three as they journey and, essentially, Jesus retells His own story from Moses to Malachi. The men near the village and scripture says they “urged Jesus strongly to stay with them.” 
I always have to stop here, take a moment and let my mind wander. What was it like listening to Jesus unfold what the prophets had long ago foretold? Not only quoting what was written but explaining it in detail as only He could? Can you wrap your mind around that kind of conversation with Jesus?
Jesus stays with the two men and shares a meal, but watch closely what happens next. Verses 30-31 say, “He took the bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Him, and He disappeared from their sight.”
Let’s digest what happened in those two verses. Jesus took the bread, blessed the bread, broke the bread and then He gave the bread and immediately their eyes saw who had been with them all along — it was Jesus. There’s something deeper than just sharing a meal happening here.
I see a direct correlation in how God works in our lives. When we look through scripture, we see a pattern develop in how Jesus handles bread. In Luke 22:19, at the Passover feast, Jesus takes the bread, blesses it, breaks it and gives it. When Jesus feeds the 5,000 in Luke 9:16, it’s the same. And in 1 Corinthians 11:23-24, it doesn’t change. It’s not only how Jesus handles bread, its how he handles each and every life He uses.
God took Moses from his mother; He blessed Moses to be raised in the house of Pharaoh; He broke Moses as he wandered around the wilderness with a bunch of obstinate Israelites for 40 years; He gave Moses to be the greatest leader that nation would ever know. Look at Jesus. God took him from the womb of a virgin; blessed him with miracles, signs and wonders; broke him on Calvary; and then gave him to be the Savior of the world.
We’re no different. At this moment you may be in the taking stage. God make be taking you from relationships. He may be taking you out of your comfort zone, He may be moving you from one place to another. Maybe you’re in the blessing stage. Life is good, things are going well, relationships are flourishing, business is booming, life seems to be one success after another. However, I have to give a word of caution: Don’t get arrogant and don’t get too comfortable because the next stage is the breaking stage. Nothing seems to be going right, every decision you make is a failure, friendships are lost, hope is fading … suddenly your eyes are opened and you see Jesus.
We are always in the hands of a loving God who is crazy about us.
