South Bryan residents opposed to higher taxes gave school officials an earful at a Bryan County School Board public hearing Monday night at Carver Elementary.
Approximately 25 people attended the hearing, which lasted more than two hours, and 14 people signed up to speak out. All who spoke voiced opposition to the BoE’s planned 2 mill increase, which the BoE hopes will raise $2.6 million of a projected $49.5 million operating budget.
Opponents cited the economy and the damage more taxes would do to families already reeling from job losses, foreclosures or reduced incomes.
"We all know people who have fixed incomes, who have no incomes," Gil Robinson said. "If this tax increase goes through, you will be doing some pretty serious damage to families."
School board Vice Chairman Jeff Morton, District 3 representative Charlie Johnson and District 4 representative Joe Pecenka attended the Monday night meeting.
